These are photographs of the people whose lives were affected, in Balhast and neighboring villages. The photos accompanied the film by Trevor Wallace,&nbsp;Pani, which premiered at the World Water Forum in Marseille.&nbsp; Chamelia is only one of innumerable Nepali hydropower projects. With a vast network of rivers rushing southward from the highest mountains in the world, Nepal boasts immense potential for hydroelectric power generation. Over the last two decades, the nation has seen a rapidly accelerating dam building boom; dozens of large dams have recently been completed, and yet these operational plants represent only a tiny sliver of the country’s hydroelectric potential. Over two hundred large hydropower projects are currently underway, mostly financed by China through their “Belt and Road” initiative. The Nepali and Chinese governments present the dams as a win-win for their states, the local people, and the environment, promising benefits to the nearby poor, agrarian communities in the form of economic development and improved access to electricity. In reality—as we learned firsthand through conversations with the people of Balhast, as well as interviews with Nepali scholars and activists—these large dams mostly benefit their foreign financiers and imperil the local people. Far from seeing improved economic prospects, many are displaced to the low-lying “Terai” region in Nepal’s south without compensation. Many of those who remain see their livelihoods ruined—the dams devastate local fish populations that the communities rely on, and disrupt access to the river water they need to irrigate their crops. We spoke (through our friend and translator, Jagat) to a woman whose house had been destroyed by the floodwaters from the dam’s water diversion tunnels, a doctor who treated workers injured in the dam’s construction and through violent conflict with imported Chinese workers, farmers who could no longer water their crops, and many people whose friends and family had been displaced—promised a payment of one “lakh” (100,000 Nepali rupees, or about $750) that never came. In Sipti—a neighboring village accessible only by foot up a steep mountain path—we encountered an alternative model of hydroelectric power generation. The sipti residents have a “micro-hydel,” a comparatively tiny, run-of-the river generator that provides electricity for the village without disrupting the river ecosystem. Everyone we spoke to in Sipti was happy with the small generator and the power it afforded them. With the interests of local people in mind, the small-scale, collectively owned and operated generation of power is a far preferable means of electrifying Nepal’s rural population. Unfortunately, their well-being is more often than not ignored by the Nepali government and foreign financiers who seek profit by selling power to neighboring nations; micro-hydro projects are rare, and large dam construction is rapidly expanding across the nation. (I carried the rolls of film for a month in a garbage bag in my backpack, fearing the ubiquitous moisture of the monsoon season—which soaked all our belongings—would ruin the photos. Each day we boarded a Soviet tank crawler that brought us from our makeshift camp, through a deep, mosquito-infested swamp, to the site of an archaeological excavation. I served as both a volunteer—carrying rocks, shoveling mud—and photographer. The following photos document the excavation during the summer months. They are intended as stills to accompany the forthcoming docu-series by filmmakers Trevor Wallace and Gino Caspari, titled&nbsp;Frozen Corpses, Golden Treasure. (Gino is also the lead archaeologist and discoverer of the site.) The team was excavating an ancient Scythian burial mound, or “kurgan.” The Scythians were a nomadic culture that thrived on the Eurasian steppe from roughly 900 to 300 BCE. They produced astoundingly meticulous goldwork and weaponry, and were known for their ferocity as horselord warriors. (The fictional “Dothraki” people from Game of Thrones are loosely based on the Scythians.) The kurgan, named “Tunnug,” is the largest and oldest discovered Scythian site, and its excavation is of particular scientific urgency, due to the twin threats of climate change and rampant looting. The warming climate is melting the once-ubiquitous permafrost, thawing organic materials (including ice mummies) that can provide invaluable insight into the Scythian culture. Furthermore, looters—in search of gold—destroy the sites, and with them, the knowledge of the culture that produced them. It’s estimated that 95% of Scythian kurgans have been looted. With so-called “material cultures” like the Scythians, who had no written language as far as we know, the in situ documentation of skeletons, mummies, and artifacts, using careful archaeological methodology—including drone photography to record the various strata and construct 3D models—is imperative to glean accurate knowledge about their culture. Excavating in a swamp is a more grueling task than in an arid region. Archaeology is a process of uncovering and documenting layers. For our team this entailed, rather than brushing rocks, a good deal of shoveling, scraping, and transporting mud. The weather in the valley is notoriously volatile. When it wasn’t too wet, we were out at the site working. Sometimes we drove around on a UAZ 452 (a soviet vehicle that resembles a VW bus) to gather food and supplies from the nearest town, and just for joyrides. When it was raining hard, we took shelter in a yurt with a wood-burning stove. Due to the difficult conditions for excavation, the massive size of the tomb, precarious funding from the Russian government, and the narrow weather window—excavation is only possible June through October, to avoid the freezing Siberian winter—a good deal of work still remains. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, North Carolina’s most destructive and deadly hurricane in over a century, there was a robust mobilization of autonomous groups in the Asheville area that filled the gap left by an inadequate federal response. These volunteer groups performed search and rescue, distributed food, water, and supplies—and they are now central to the cleanup and rebuilding efforts. Some of these groups pre-existed the hurricane, including Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR), while others, like BeWell and Valley Strong Disaster Relief, formed in its immediate aftermath. The Appalachian spirit of self-reliance transcended political divides: groups composed of anarchist punks and conservative Christians performed the same kind of lifesaving work, though they describe it with different language. Working together with their lives upended (many lost their homes, and some lost friends or family members), tight communities formed, and people across cultural boundaries built a temporary society based on giving and care. The question is: what happens now? The most acute phase of relief is over, and many people have returned to their regular jobs.&nbsp;This is a moment of limbo. Though the suffering caused by the disaster cannot be understated, nearly everyone I spoke with described the last few months as the most meaningful of their lives: a rupture in the capitalist status quo and a window into a kinder society. Many formed book groups to read “A Paradise Built in Hell,” a book by Rebecca Solnit that examines the altruistic communities that form after disasters. There is a bittersweetness about the prospect of life returning to “normal,” and a striving to keep the solidarity and community spirit going. Where does this energy go?&nbsp; Does Asheville and the surrounding area go back to “normal,” or will there be some lasting positive changes? Will Asheville be more resilient and ready for the next disaster? Can other cities learn from its community-based response? These photographs have appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, PBS, NBC, and many other publications. On March 7, 2025, the federal government cancelled $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University. The Department of Justice alleged a climate of anti-semitism on campus and issued a list of demands, including placing the university’s Middle Eastern Studies department under receivership and increasing security on campus. On March 8, federal agents abductated Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia alumnus and green card holder, and brought him to a detention facility in Louisiana. On March 21, Columbia’s interim (now resigned) president, Katrina Armstrong, announced that the university had conceded to all of the the federal government’s demands, marking an unprecedented intrusion into academic freedom. Student and faculty protests have erupted on campus and around the country.
